I’m not going out there, it’s too cold!
I don’t know if you can tell but the difference between this picture and the one you’ve seen before is that the camera on the tripod is OUTSIDE the window whereas it used to be inside the window. The camera & lens are less than 12 inches away from the feeder.
The difference is that I’m using a 24-70mm lens at the longest setting (about 66mm - I never use it at the longest zoom in this case 70mm). I used to use a 70-200mm but it couldn’t get me “close enough” to the bird. Below is a comparison between the 2 lenses at the minimum focusing distance and how well the bird fills the frame.

The top picture is the 70-200mm at about 195mm and the bottom is the 24-70mm at 66mm. However since I can get inches away from the bird with the 24-70mm lens (as opposed to being 3 feet away with the 70-200mm), the bird appears larger in the frame. That is the key!
Now all I have to do is figure out how to keep the bird from flinching! It’s time to train these little buggers!
