The Speedlight Family
Today I retrieved my Nikon SB-800 from Nikon in El Segundo, CA. I was extremely fortunate that the repair work was done under warranty and was of no charge to me. In my previous post, I mentioned I kicked the lightstand the SB-800 was mounted on, causing the flash to make fall onto the hardwood floor head first. Afterwards, the unit would no longer fire. For a while, I thought I was out $400 until I tried my luck with the warranty repair. Luckily there was no apparent abuse/damage on the strobe head itself, thus qualifying for warranty breakage.
However, because I wasn’t sure whether or not Nikon would repair my flash, I hedged my bet by purchasing 2 new SB-600. They are smaller and cheaper. I justified this purchase with the need of multiple flash units regardless of whether or not the SB-800 would return fixed or broken.
Here’s my Speedlight family: two SB-800’s, two SB-800 and one SU-800 controller

I actually have a bastard child SB-26 (not shown) that is useless with Nikon’s CLS (Creative Lighting System). I’m keeping it in the event I ever go with Pocket Wizards or other RF (Radio Frequency) type triggers.
